Henderson leads Duke past Maryland

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/25/2009 - College Park, MD (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Gerald Henderson had 19 points and eight rebounds to pace seventh-ranked Duke to a 78-67 win over Maryland, as the Blue Devils won their third straight overall and swept the season series from the Terrapins.

Elliot Williams added 15 points, while Kyle Singler notched 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils (23-5, 9-4 ACC), who moved within a game of North Carolina for the lead in the conference. Jon Scheyer scored 12 for Duke, which next plays on the road against Virginia Tech Saturday before hosting Florida State. Duke's final regular season game is at North Carolina on March 8.

There was some concern though for the Blue Devils, when sophomore guard Nolan Smith went down hard to the floor after running into Maryland's Dave Neal on a screen early in the second half. Smith remained on the Duke bench before going to the locker room.

Landon Milbourne had 19 points for Maryland (17-10, 6-7), which was coming off a home overtime win over the Tar Heels on Saturday. Adrian Bowie scored 14, while Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes each scored 10. Vasquez, who had a triple-double on Saturday, fouled out late in the second half against Duke.

Milbourne's two free throws tied the game at 60 with 5:44 remaining, but Henderson and Singler countered with three-pointers to put the Blue Devils in front for good.

Scheyer's three-ball moved the margin to 72-63 with 1:54 left.

It was tight throughout the first half and the teams went to the locker room tied at 34, this despite a big difference in shooting. Duke was 11-of-32 from the field in the first 20 minutes, while Maryland was 15-of-28.

Game Notes

Duke beat Maryland, 85-44, last month and has won four straight meetings...The Blue Devils held a 39-28 advantage in rebounds...Scheyer was 1-of-7 from three-point range, but the rest of the Duke team was 7-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Albert Pujols to be This Year's Home Run Champ Says Online Sportsbook

Barry Bonds is a 50-1 long shot to be this year's home run champ odds.  The favorite to be this year's home run champ is none other than Albert Pujols, however.

Now that Barry Bonds is signed and in Giants camp, it is on to his pursuit of all of sports most prestigious records: the all-time home run mark. Bonds sits just 21 homers shy of tying Hank Aaron for the career mark at 755. Word out of Giants’ camp is that Bonds is the healthiest he has been in a few years. Bonds is just two seasons removed from his injury riddled 2005 campaign where he played in only 14 games and hit only 5 home runs. He did come back last year and had a solid season hitting .270 with 26 bombs. All eyes will be on Bonds this spring and summer not only because of his home run chase but his highly publicized steroid abuse allegations. If and when Bonds breaks the record, he surely will not get the positive attention one should for breaking a record that was once thought of as “unbreakable”. Despite Bonds decent season last year, he is just 50-1 at MySportsbook.com to lead the MLB in long balls this season.

Not surprisingly, the favorites to go deep the most times this season are Albert Pujols 5-1, Ryan Howard 6-1, David Ortiz 8-1 and Alex Rodriguez 12-1. With 49 homers, Pujols finished second in the National League behind Howard (58). Pujols is considered the favorite due to the consistent power numbers that he has posted since breaking into the league in 2001. Also one must consider the fact that he played in 16 fewer games then Howard did due to an injury. Howard smashed 58 homers in his first complete season of big league play en route to the National League MVP odds award. He silenced his critics by successfully hitting left-handed pitching. Howard also displayed the ability to use his power to the opposite field. Two attributes which should keep Howard amongst the league leaders in long balls for years to come. From the American League representatives, David Ortiz leads the field. Ortiz was second in the majors last year with 54 home runs. Except for 1999 when he only played in 10 games, Ortiz has improved on his home run numbers each year he has been in the majors (1997).

SPORTS BETTING

NFL Football Betting Online

In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.

It is called the "pointspread."

Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.

But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.

A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.

In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.

The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .
